Research and Sample Collection of Microorganisms

Dr. Wichian Yongmanit, an expert in microorganisms, stated that the Microbe Bank of SAS company has collected microorganisms into two main groups: Bacillus and Lactobacillus, which are used in the production of probiotic microorganisms for economic livestock such as pigs, chickens, and shrimp. These processes must comply with regulations set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which clearly specify the types of microorganisms that can be used as probiotics.

To discover new strains of microorganisms, Dr. Wichians team has traveled to collect samples from natural sources in Thailand and neighboring countries, such as northern Thailand and border regions with Myanmar, focusing on microorganisms found in traditional fermented foods like fermented soybeans. They then isolate and analyze DNA to accurately identify the strains. The resulting data are compared with global databases to confirm the names and uniqueness of the respective microorganisms.

Benefits of Local Microorganisms

Local microorganisms in Thailand possess notable advantages due to their ability to adapt to the environment, humans, and animals within the country effectively. Microorganisms that originate and thrive in specific areas are more compatible with the living organisms present in those regions. Therefore, Thai microorganisms are well-suited to the people and animals in Thailand, just as Korean microorganisms are appropriate for Korean food. The Microbe Bank also plays a crucial role in supporting research aimed at preserving biodiversity and conserving microorganisms over the long term, in addition to fostering the development of new innovations in various areas, such as:

  • Development of disease treatments
  • Nutritional supplements for animals
  • Biotechnology that helps manage the environment and supports agriculture

Creating a Future with the Microbe Bank

The Microbe Bank not only preserves biological resources but also serves as a vital tool for developing new innovations that have long-term positive impacts on Thailand's economy. This includes job creation, adding value to various industries, and conserving important natural resources. With the diversity of microorganisms in Thailand, the Microbe Bank is a key element in applying scientific knowledge for the benefit of both the nation and the world.
