1. Pyrimidine: Cytosine (C), Thymine (T) and Uracil (U)

2. Purine: Adenine (A) and Guanine (G)

            Nucleotide is the main structure of both DNA and RNA. It has a significant implication in metabolism procedure of the body as well as deemed an important factor in dividing cells and building new cells necessary for the baby’s growth. Nucleotide can be found mostly in breastmilk and colestrum.

Nucleotide with an efficiency in gustatory perception such as IMP and GMP in which GMP is more efficient than IMP in terms of perception. However, gustatory perception of nucleotide will depend on glutamed that naturally increases taste buds. We have found out that the ratio of IMP:GMP is 50:50 or A50:50.

            Typically, our taste buds can be activated by glutamate and nucleotide (or small molecules lined up to form DNA) Our sensory perception in the tongue and throat does not yield any gustatory perception but makes us satisfied with food. Glutamate and nucleotide such as adenosine, ADP (adenosine diphosphate), ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and UTP (uridinetriphosphate) which are neurotransmitters that can activate nerve cells, sensory perceptions or other cells where their receptors can also be stimulated by glutamate, adenosine, ADP, ATP or UTP.

Minerals or inorganic matter as food’s component

Minerals or inorganic matter which are a component of remaining food will turn into ashes after all organic matters in plant and animal tissue have been under the combustion process. Minerals are important nutrients our body requires since they support the functioning of cells and body organs. Minerals are considered a significant body structure such as bones, teeth and blood while others are directly related to our growth process, minerals are also a key component of enzymes, hormones and vitamins. In addition, minerals help control the functioning of every body’s muscle; for example, controlling muscles and nerve system, blood circulation as well as balancing the liquid circulation inside our body. Minerals can be divided into 2 major groups as follows:

1. Macro minerals refer to minerals our body requires in a large amount or more than 100 mg. per day. Such minerals include calcium, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, sodium, sulphur and chloride. Calcium is the most commonly found mineral in our body, compared with the amount of phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sodium.

2. Trace minerals refer to minerals our body requires in a fewer amount or less than 100 mg. per day. Although these minerals are not required at a large amount, but they are still significant. Some examples are iron, zinc, selenium, manganese, copper, iodine, chromium, cobalt, fluoridem, molybdenum and vanadium.

            Most of the minerals used in making animal feeds contain phosphorous and calcium since animals need these two minerals more than others for their growth and productivity.

Phosphorous is an important nutrient for animals

            Phosphorous is a significant component of the bone. Phosphorous found in most plants can be in 2 different forms; that is, organic phosphate (phospolipid, phospo protein and nucleic acid etc.) and inorganic phosphate (phytic acid and phytate) that can be found in most plants. Therefore, phosphorous found in plants that the animals can utilize is only 1 out of 3. Examples of phosphorous derived from animals are fish meal, porcine meal, meat and bone meal, all of which contain a high level of useful phosphorous. Nonetheless, animal feeds contain only a few of such raw materials (approximately 5 percent), resulting in insufficient phosphorous level; therefore, phosphorous must be added into the feeds’ recipe that can respond to the animals’ need.

Sources of phosphorous used in animal feeds

            Sources of phosphorous include dicalcium phosphate/ monocalcium phosphate in a form of inorganic and organic phosphate. These raw materials not only provide phosphorous, but also a good source of calcium. At present, there are many types pf phosphorous as indicated below:

– Rock phosphate used without being processed

– Dicalcium phosphate produced from rock phosphate

– Dicalcium phosphate derived from calcium carbonate

– Dicalcium phosphate derived from animal’s bone

Rock phosphate

            Generally, it is not recommended to use rock phosphates in animal farming without them being processed although they contain some phosphorous. Rock phosphates naturally derived contain the amount of fluorine at the level that may potentially pose danger to animals. Excess fluorine will be absorbed and stored at the bones that may affect bone tissues and in turn causes osteoporosis. Moreover, unprocessed rock phosphate may be contaminated with heavy metals.

Dicalcium phosphate produced from rock phosphate under the production process

            For dicalcium phosphates produced from rock phosphate under perfect production procedure, they must be incinerated under 100 degree celcius to separate fluorince (F) and heavy metal that may be contaminated with rock phosphates. The advantages of using rock phosphates to produce dicalcium phosphate lie in that rock phosphates already contain some levels of phosphorous. Therefore, the manufacturer can add the phosphorous level as deemed appropriate by adding phosphoric acid until different phosphorous levels will be achieved such as P14, P16 or P18. However, the production process has been altered these days. Some manufacturing procedures have been cut down and the temperature has been lowered to only 500-600 degree celcius to minimize cost. This in turn, makes the utilization of phosphorous incomplete and there may be some residues of fluorine or heavy metal as a result.

Dicalcium phosphate generated from calcium carbonate

            This type of dicalcium phosphate is generated by adding phosphoric acid until required phosphorous level is achieved. The advantage of calcium carbonate lies in the fact that it helps reduce the risk of contaminated fluorine and heavy metal. It does not require high heat during the production process; therefore, it also minimizes expenditures arising from thermal energy consumption. However, the manufacturer must add more phosphorous instead of rock phosphate as start-up raw material since calcium carbonate does not contain phosphorous as its key component. For any production process employing calcium carbonate as the start-up raw material is mostly monocalcium phosphate production.

Dicalcium phosphate produced from the animal’s bones

            The advantages lie in that phosphorous derived from the animal’s bones can be utilized almost entirely, if not entirely. There is no risk involved in terms of residues from fluorine and heavy metal. Typically, animal’s bones comprise of 10-12 percent phosphorous and its level can be increased by adding phosphoric acid in the same manner as dicalcium phosphate produced from rock phosphate or calcium carbonate. Consequently, phosphorous used as a source of minerals for animals must be dicalcium phosphate derived from the animal’s bones or rock phosphate or calcium carbonate which have been under complete production process. Rock phosphates that are still contaminated with fluorine or heavy metal are not recommended. Nonetheless, to enable the animals to benefit the most from phosphorous, dicalcium phosphate or monocalcium phosphate with phosphorous level of 18 percent and above shall be employed.

Sources of phosphorous generally available in the market are classified in many levels as follows:

Benefits the animals will gain from the minerals

1. Minerals help strengthen bone structure and they are also a component of organic substance such as protein and fat wich in turn being used to build muscles and body organs. Minerals are directly related to muscle contraction and nerve system.

2. Minerals act as a component of enzymes’ stimulant.

3. Minerals help maintain pH level and are directly related to the functioning of vitamins. Calcium used in animal feeds are in the form of calcium carbonate such as seashells, crushed dust and chipped stones. These raw materials provide calcium in particular and while these sources of calcium contain almost the same amount of calcium, but their price is somewhat varied. Consequently, we must take into consideration the animal specie that such calcium will be used for. Seashells and chipped stones are more expensive than crushed dust; therefore, they are suitable for the animal feeds provided to egg-laying hens.

This issue of Land Animals Magazine would like to introduce you to Khun Petchpana Angsakul (Khun Petch), a talented lady and the owner of “Prateung Farm”, located in Muak Lek subdistrict, Saraburi. Prateung Farm is a good quality farm that distributes raw milk to Thai-Denmark Dairy Cattle Cooperatives Lamphaya Klang Company Limited in which Khun Petch herself has become a member of this cooperative as well.

Model farm of hybrid dairy cattle

            At present, “Prateung Farm” has been supported by Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand to become “dairy cattle farming model” where farmers and general public are always welcomed to learn about raising technique of dairy cattle and farm management in order that they can employ such knowledge and apply it in real life situation in accordance with international standard.

            Khun Petchpana or “Khun Petch” is the second generation who has run “Prateung Farm” for 8 years since 2010. Khun Petch has continued the farming business from her mother who began it more than 20 years ago. Khun Petch’s educational and professional background is no ordinary. Her bachelor’s degree was in biotechnology in which she graduated from Rungsit University and her master’s degree in postharvest technology from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. She used to work in the Purchasing Department of one of the largest consumer products company in the country. The main reason she quitted her day-to-day job and furthered her family’s business is her aging mother.

            Khun Petchpana started the farming business with zero knowledge in this field. She relied only on the knowledge and insight her mother had given while at the same time she made some inquiries to gain insight from other experienced professional and she had self-studied and attended the program initiated by Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand. The programs include milking cow technique and artificial insemination. Khun Petchpana gradually developed and furthered the farming business, from 100 cows in the past to 250 milk cows at present. She then decided to expand her farm and improve the housing condition to be even cleaner, more open to facilitate the air flow that in turn will stimulate all the milk cows to produce high quality raw milk.

The breeds commonly found at Prateung Farm are mainly the hybrids of Thai Fresian, Jersey and Brown Swiss as these three breeds yield high quality raw milk.

The dairy cattle farming encompasses the total area of 100 rais, including the pasture area where grass such as guinea and napier have been planted as roughages to feed the cows. For housing and farm management, the farm is divided according to the age group of the dairy cattle; for example, housing for cows with lactation period and those with dry period, housing for fresh cows and cows up to 3 months old, housing for cows 4-6 months old and housing for weaning cattle (7-12 months old). Nonetheless, Prateung Farm has mainly employed artificial insemination that has been supported and closely monitored by the animal husbandry expert from Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand while emphasizing on using probiotic coupled with the feeds’ recipe. In producing raw milk with the quality and standard acceptable by Thai-Denmark Dairy Cattle Cooperatives Lamphaya Klang Company Limited, Khun Petchpana has specifically selected raw materials for animal feeds produced by Siam Agri Supply Company Limited, a major distributor, importer and exporter of complete raw materials for animal feeds. The formula used in the feeds is “Biotic Max 1”, a probiotic with added microorganisms that help balance the alimentary system of dairy cattle, stimulate their growth and appetite while increasing the daily productivity of each cow.

As for the secret in raising healthy dairy cattle and milking technique that enhances the quality of raw milk according to the purchasing standard of Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand, Khun Petchpana suggested that the most important factor is the loving and care of the raisers themselves. Regarding farm management, she has consistently emphasized on providing her cows with suitable feeds for each age group and physical condition since the body of a milk cow directly relates to the amount of fat stored in its body. Thus, it is significant to acknowledge the physical condition of the dairy cattle whether they are thin or fat, especially at the end of their milking period and dry period to maintain healthy body and normal reproductive system that enables the highest quality milk subsequently.

            Nevertheless, the body of a cow will change according to its productivity and the amount of feed provided during post pregnancy as the milk cow’s weight will drop, making it difficult to yield sufficient milk and its body may somewhat deteriorate which in turn may pose an impact on its breeding afterwards. In terms of daily farm management, Prateung Farm has a total of 10 workers in which the duty has been appropriately allocated, starting from very early in the morning (4.00 a.m.) Four workers start their morning routine in the housing to feed the cows whereas the other six are responsible for milking cow. Khun Petchpana herself will be accountable for checking up the cows’ health and as soon as she notices something wrong, she will immediately resolve such problem like breast infection. Khun Petchpana will prevent such disease in due time while strictly adhering to the standard specified; for example, cleaning the stables, getting rid of cows’ droppings out of the housing and drying them under the sun to subsequently sell it to vendors. In addition, she will use clean water mixed with sterilized solution to cure breast infection.

            After the milking process is complete, Khun Petchpana will let the cows graze for an hour to close their dug and to minimize breast infection. “After the milk cows have given birth to their babies, their body score will drop instantly and this will affect their growth, milking and reproduction process etc. Consequently, cow raisers must pay attention to the raising technique and feeds provided, starting from the early age and must continue at every age group. If you have taken good care of your milk cows, they can provide you will raw milk up to 10-12 years before dismissal. We must treat our daily cattle with great care since they are born and generally, when the cows are 15 months old, they can reproduce and when they are 2 years of age, the milking process can then start. Cow raisers must notice the cows’ growth performance and fertility; for example, after the milk cows have given birth to their first baby, it must be no later than 28 months that we must take good care of these cows or else it will be useless and cow raisers cannot fully benefit from the raising.”, Khun Petchpana added. The most outstanding quality of dairy cattle will be evaluated by its body condition score (BSC) which must not be lower than 3.3.5

Emphasis on food quality and housing standard…a key to farming sustainability

In terms of marketing and distribution channel, Prateung Farm currently produces 1,800 kg/day or raw milk and sell to Thai-Denmark Dairy Cattle Cooperatives Lamphaya Klang Company Limited at a price in compliance with the standard certified by the members of the cooperatives. The cooperatives have classified the quality and standard of raw milk in Thailand into different levels in which level 4 means the highest quality milk, with butter fat no less than 3.5 percent and milk protein should not be less than 2.8 percent.

When asking about the obstacles in the management of the dairy farming, Khun Petchpana told us that raising milk cows is somewhat difficult and somewhat easy, it mainly depends on your heart, patience, care and attentiveness of the raisers themselves. Major obstacles include the maintenance factor; for example, how to prevent the cows from being sick. The anser lies in that you must regularly clean and maintain a good air condition of your housing to ensure its cleanliness. The farmers must be open-minded and keep nourishing their cows with finished food, roughages, concentrates and supplementary food to ensure that they are strong, healthy and yield raw milk of highest quality. For current economic situation, it does not have a specific impact on dairy farming. Khun Petchpana continued that every drop of milk produced here will be carefully inspected before market distribution. In addition, our selling price has been verified and guaranteed by the cooperatives. In the future, Khun Petchpana plans to renovate the housing area but she expected that the number of milk cows will remain unchanged. She will emphasize on thorough management while simultaneously maintaining the standard of the farm and raw milk. Lastly, Khun Petchpana had provided some suggestions to the dairy farmers that “Dairy farming is the occupation gracefully granted by His Majest the Late King. It is a sustainable occupation. The most important factor is the attitude of the farmers. Farmers of the new era must open up their heart, try to learn new things and apply dairy farming techniques and the body of knowledge to further their own farm.”

Good quality fermented soybean meal

Each animal specie requires different amount of feed and energy for their survival and growth at each stage. Therefore, raw materials used as feed additives such as fish meal, soybean meal, rice bran, grits, fermented soybean meal as well as supplementary food like probiotic or finished food must be of good quality. The source of such raw materials must be inspected while effective feeding technique must be administered to respond to such animal’s requirement.

            Fermented soybean meal is one of the most effective raw material that can replace concentrated soybean protein. This fermented soybean meal is produced from dehulled soybean meal from which its oil has already been extracted and then fermented with microorganism. The purpose is to facilitate protein digestion to convert it into a form of short peptide or free amino acid that in turn will facilitate easy and speedy digestion as well as absorbtion of such protein. The type of microorganism used in fermentation process has been carefully selected to ensure its quality in generating protease enzyme such as Bacillus spp., Aspergillus spp. etc.

Raw soybean meal as a protein source can be mixed with animal feeds; however, raw soybean meal can incur a negative impact on animals as they contain anti-nutritional factors such as Trypsin inhibitor, Hemaglutin, Lectin and B-conglycinin. Generally speaking, such substances cause a decline in productivity that in turn minimizes the digestion of protein, carbohydrate and fat (Herkelma et al., 1992)

            Currently, most of the soybean meals are generated from soybean oil extract. Soybean meal will be processed under heat during which anti-nutritional factors will be destroyed. Nonetheless, soybean meal contains some types of organic matter that are heat resistant. Animals cannot digest such organic matters or benefits from them. These organic matters include Non-starch polysaccharides (NSP, which can be commonly found in a form of Galacto-Oligosaccharide (Stachyose and Raffinose) and Phytin owing to potential usage limitations.

At present, the quality of fermented soybean meal has been consistently improved so that its protein quality will be as closest as that of fish meal. This can be achieved by employing enzymes from bacillus microorganism in the fermentation process. Therefore, protein can be digested more easily while anti-nutritinal factors such as Trypsin inhibitor, B-conglycinin and Lectin will be eliminated. Besides, small peptides or short peptides are probiotics that are easily digestible; thus, animals can absorb these nutrients more speedily. These small peptides are highly soluble and facilitate and balance the alimentary system, so the number of probiotics will be higher than that of pathogens and inhibit these pathogens from further growth.

Why is fermented soybean meal suitable for animal feeds?

1. Fermented soybean meal can be employed as protein supplement for every animal specie, especially for young animals.

2. Fermented soybean meal will improve protein utilization since such protein has been digested and become short peptide as well as free amino acid.

“Reung Charoen Farm” – the largest egg-laying hen farm in Lampun

Last January, our team from Siam Agri Supply Company Limited had an opportunity to travel to Lampun to visit one of our customers, Khun Reung Chaiyathep, the owner of “Reung Charoen Farm”, the largest egg-laying hen farm that has employed our probiotic product or “Biotic Max 2”. Such visit is to follow-up results from our customers who did try our product and to utilize the insight for further product development to respond to customers’ needs more effectively. After the actual result had been collected, we found out that our customers have been satisfied with the efficiency of Biotic Max 2 and that is why they have consistently supported our product until present.

Khun Reung Chaiyathep is very well-known amoung those who operate the egg-laying business as he started this farming business way back in 1984. Previously, chicken raising is operated in an open farm and he did all the management by himself, so he has gained profound knowledge and experience in handling various situations in a timely manner. At present, Khun Reung owns 2 closed chicken coops and he also applies condo-like cages in EVAP system in raising the total of 75,000 egg-laying hens as well as 38,000 broilers. In terms of chickens’ feeds, he had invented his own recipe, mixed with probiotic product to enhance their immune system. The ratio between Biotic Max 2 and animal feeds is 0.5:700 kilograms and must be used consistently. The farm’s productivity will be delivered to the distribution center located in front of the farm and currently the farm has 3 egg separator machines of which the total price is 350,000 baht and can separate up to 60,000 eggs per day. The distribution center emphasizes mainly on wholesale and not retail since he prefers vendors to distribute and sell directly to consumers. These vendors come from nearby provinces such as Chieng Rai, Prae and Lampun while retail customers buying directly from the distribution center are customers living nearby and those who purchase on a regular basis are our regular customers who prefer our fine skin eggs.

In terms of safety, husbandry farm has been appropriately separated from egg distribution center in accordance with hygienic principle. A close monitoring and supervision of every small detail has also conducted, including entrance and exit of the farm. Trucks transporting raw materials must be inspected and sterilized when entering and exiting the area. Every material that may be at risk of being infectious must be closely supervised to ensure the utmost safety and to prevent the farm from being contaminated. In addition, the Department of Livestock Development will perform a monthly inspecction at the egg distribution center to collect some eggs for further testing.

Future plan – According to current condition of animal husbandry and price strategy, Khun Reung gradually adjust his raising technique based on current circumstance. He also plans to build a new warehouse to store the corn whisk and food processor relocated from Hang Dong.
